How to Calculate Flooring
Multiply room length by width to get square footage, then add a waste factor for cuts and pattern matching. Always buy slightly more than needed — flooring from different production batches can vary in color.
Formula: Sq Ft Needed = (Length × Width) × (1 + Waste % ÷ 100). Boxes = ⌈Sq Ft ÷ Coverage per Box⌉.
Recommended Waste by Material & Layout
| Material / Layout | Waste % | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hardwood or LVP — straight | 10% | Minimal cuts, simple pattern |
| Hardwood or LVP — diagonal | 15% | More angled cuts at walls |
| Tile — straight lay | 10% | Standard grid layout |
| Tile — offset / brick | 15% | Half-cuts along edges |
| Tile — diagonal or herringbone | 20% | Significant corner waste |
| Carpet | 10% | Roll width may not match room |
Frequently Asked Questions
- How many square feet for a 12×14 room?
- A 12×14 room is 168 square feet. With 10% waste you need 185 sq ft. With 20% waste for herringbone or diagonal tile, buy 202 sq ft.
- Why does layout pattern affect how much flooring I need?
- Diagonal and herringbone layouts require more angled cuts along the perimeter. Those cut-off pieces often can't be reused, increasing waste compared to straight lay.
- Should I buy extra beyond the waste factor?
- Yes — buy one extra box if budget allows and save it. If a plank gets damaged later, matching your exact flooring from the same production run is often impossible.
- How do I find the square footage per box?
- It is printed on the side of every flooring box, labeled as "Coverage" or "Area." Common ranges are 15–25 sq ft for tile and 18–30 sq ft for hardwood and LVP.
